The Art Education Area, in cooperation with the Health Education Area, of the College of Education, University of the Philippines Diliman responded to the call of promoting culture-based education through the 2nd National MAPEH Symposium with the theme, Culture-based Strategies in MAPEH. Now on its second year, the event brought together MAPEH experts, educators, and students to bring new perspectives, knowledge and strategies to MAPEH instruction. The even was held on July 15, 2017 at the UP NISMED Auditorium, with a total of 371 from diiferent parts of the country. Registration started at 8am and the program ran from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

 

After an opening ritual led by Mr. Apoy EJ Jacinto and Mr. Orly Abon of the Philippine Art Educators Association, the attendees were warmly welcomed by Dr. Ma. Therese Bustos, Dean of the UP College of Education. Director Joyce Andaya of the DepEd Central Office then gave an overview of culture-based education. She emphasized contextualization, localization, and indigenization of instruction. In the same light, Mr. Apoy EJ Jacinto talked about culture-based strategies in Art Education by patterning his discussion on concepts in weaving such as “habi” and “buhol”. He stressed the importance of having a strong grasp of the peculiarities of indigenous materials and concepts to be more responsive and truthful in teaching the local and indigenous cultural context. The attendees also enjoyed the discussion and demonstration of culture-based strategies in Music Education by Prof. Joy Timbol Guadalupe of the UP College of Music, who used playful, native songs in emphasizing essential points. Prof. Mark Anthony Hilario, Dmd from Manila Central University highlighted the richness of our ethnic health culture in his discussion on indigenizing Health Education. Finally, Prof. Rachelle Peneyra of the UP College of Human Kinetics explored culture-based physical education by analyzing definitions of sports or physical education, its development throughout history and how these could be discussed in the classroom. The day concluded with the closing remarks by REGALE Coordinator, Prof. Charo Defeo-Baquial.
