Eduk: Pangalawang Karangalan sa Parada ng mga Parol 2016 sa Unibersidad
Nagtamo ng pangalawang karangalan sa Parada ng mga Parol 2016 ang Kolehiyo ng Edukasyon, kasama ang UP Integrated School (UPIS) at National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED). Ang paboreal na sumasagisag sa dangal at karunungan ang mataginting na tinig na sumalamin sa temang “Himig ng Diliman, Hagkan ang Gabi”.
Ang boses ng edukasyon o karunungan ang nagsisilbing mahalagang pundasyon sa paglinang ng kakayahan ng bawat mamamayan. Ito ang gabay sa pagsulong ng mga mithiin ng sambayanan tungo sa makatao at mapagpalayang pagbabago. Patuloy ang edukasyon na humuhubog sa ating lipunan at pambansang pagkakakilanlan.
Ipinapakita ng tikas ng tindig ng paboreal ang angking dangal ng bawat mamamayan sa ating lipunan. Ipinapahiwatig naman ng maningning at kumikinang na mga balahibo nito, na gawa sa tradisyonal na pamaypay na anahaw at mga CD, ang pagiging tanglaw ng karunungan sa ating kinabukasan.
Sa tulang Tanglaw na akda ng isang mag-aaral sa Eduk na si Mark Angelo Francisco, napapaloob ang kahulugan ng simbolong ito.

UP College of Education Now Center of Excellence for Teacher Education
The UP College of Education has been officially recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a Center of Excellence (COE) for Teacher Education.
In accordance with the pertinent provisions of RA 7722, otherwise known as the Higher Education Act of 1994, and by virtue of the Commission en Banc Resolution No. 193-2016 dated March 14, 2016, COEs serve as potent catalysts for world class scholarships, best practices, innovative curriculum, research and extension and professional development in Teacher Education program.
The designation of the UP College of Education as a COE is valid from April 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018.

Reflections from a Grateful Student
Recipients of the 2015 MacArthur and Josefina Reyes Excellence in Teaching Awards
In the year 2000-2001, when I first attended Torres High Class 1961 40th anniversary reunion ( it was called reunion of the millennium), I had the opportunity to sit down with then Dean Vivien M. Talisayon, and we discussed what help we can extend to the College of Education. At that time we had helped in the renovation of the MAURA DELOS REYES Audio visual room, in honor of our mother who was a schoolteacher in our hometown all her life. (Later we also dedicated another room for our oldest pamangkin AGNES MADAMBA who was a graduate of UPCOE and specialized in Special Education.)
Dean Talisayon and I came up with the idea of establishing the Teachers Awards to honor and recognize the outstanding work and dedication of the faculty of UPCOE.
Coincidentally before our 40th high school reunion/ I tried to locate my high school teachers, and those I found, I invited to our reunion dinner dance. That was the first time I saw these teachers after graduating from Torres High School in 1961. Our class was excited to see our former teachers.
As I reflect on my life, I would not have gone to high school after grade school in Caingin, San Rafael, Bulacan, if not due to some twist of fate, that the then principal, Cesario Bandong, admitted me, a provincial student, in a Manila City School (Torres High), which provided me four years of free high school education.
Getting admitted to Torres Hi was just the first step, I was so blessed to be under great and excellent teachers, who were proficient in their major subjects, who were devoted to their students, who were all kind to me, and who gave me all kinds of encouragement – you see, I was quite shy, having grown up in the province. Our teachers spent a lot of extra hours after school, to train us to compete in the Manila inter – high school math and science contests. The results were gratifying, we won several trophies and medals in those contests for dear Torres High.
Their hard work and dedication paid off in 1961 when our class produced four science scholars of the Science Foundation of the Philippines (NSDB). Two of us, (including myself), were in the top 20 students nationwide. The scholarship afforded me a free ride to finish BS Electrical Engineering at UP Diliman. Free tuition, free books with substantial monthly cash allowance.
After graduation, I was invited to teach at UP Engineering, and did it for 5 years; topped the Electrical Board Exams; worked for MERALCO for 4 years before doing graduate school in the US. After Graduate school, I established my career in electrical engineering in Ohio, USA, until retirement.
As you can see the College of Education Excellence in Teaching Awards is to mainly say thank you to my many teachers and mentors who have touched my life in a very special way – MacArthur would have not been MacArthur today if not for the inspiration and mentoring they unselfishly provided me.They are part of God’s blessings to me, my family, and my loved ones. I realized, when I started teaching at the UP College of Engineering, how a teacher in many little ways, can be instrumental in the life and success of their students. The story of these awards is not only the story of my teachers, it is also the story of my life.

LLC Award Recipient from the UP College of Education
Fleur de lys Cupino, a College of Education graduate, was a recipient of the 5th Lourdes Lontok-Cruz’s (LLC) award for Most Outstanding Dissertation in Women’s and Gender Studies in a ceremony held at the UP Mass Communications auditorium last December 7, 2015. Her dissertation adviser, Dr. Grace Koo joined her in this event. This cycle of LLC awards covers theses and dissertations for the academic years 2011-2015 from entries of the entire UP system. Her research on “Stories of Martial Law: Teaching and Learning Processes from the Lenses of Activist Mothers and their Children” was one of the four awarded in the dissertation category.
The UP Center for Women’s Studies (UPCWS) and UP Center for Women’s Studies Foundation, Inc. (UPCWSFI) introduced the LLC award in 2000 with a grant from Atty. Lourdes Lontok-Cruz, president of the UPCWSFI from 1998-2009. The LLC Award recognizes and highlights the significant role of of Atty. Lontok-Cruz (1923-2011) in strengthening women’s studies in the University of the Philippines and her advocacy for women’s equality and gender empowerment.
It is with pride that that the UP College of Education celebrates this event with Ms. Cupino, who was also a recipient of the Most Outstanding Dissertation Award at the College of Education graduation ceremony in June 2015.
UP Special Education Council Honored as 2015 Volunteer Group Advocate for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities
The Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled, Inc. (PFRDI), through its Apolinario Mabini Awards Committee, honored the University of the Philippines Special Education (SPED) Council as the year’s Volunteer Group Advocate for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PWD). President Benigno S. Aquino III presented the award on September 29, 2015 at the Heroes Hall of the Malacañan Palace. High Council President Shiela M. Odoño, Members’ Development Committee Head Alexandra Regina D. Martin and UP College of Education Secretary Prof. Vanessa Lusung-Oyzon received the award in behalf of the student organization. Externals Committee Head Maria Beatriz A. Vergara and Secretary General Shaira M. Odoño accompanied them to the occassion. Professor Charo Deefeo-Baquial is their Faculty Adviser.
The Award is given to a volunteer group that has supported PWD and/or their families through care/service provision, advocacy, social action, community development, legal action, and related services. The UP SPED Council was recognized for giving its time and talent to educate special children through various innovative ways and means. Through their unconditional service, utmost excellence and unwavering commitment, the leaders and members of the student organization uplift children with special needs and their families via various projects. Aside from these, the UP SPED Council partners with Volunteers for Children for the VFC Laugh. Play, Learn; and with Miriam College for Run for FAN (Fully Abled Nation).
The UP College of Education and the Special Education Area are very proud of the accomplishments of UP SPED Council and hope that they would continue their selfless service of empowering the Filipino child with special needs.
UPAA confers 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award to Educ alumnae, Dr. Dina S. Ocampo and Dr. Barbara Wong-Fernandez
The College of Education is proud of the achievement of two of its beloved alumnae, Dr. Dina S. Ocampo and Dr. Barbara Wong-Fernandez.
Two Eduk alumnae, Usec. Dina S. Ocampo and Dr. Barbara Wong-Fernandez, recently received the 2015 UP Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award for Educational Innovation and 2015 UP Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award for Educational Administration respectively on June 20, 2015 at the UP Bahay ng Alumni. The UPAA official website explains that the UPAA Distinguished Alumni Award is conferred to “alumni who have demonstrated, in their chosen field of endeavor, exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions that bring about substantial benefits to society and distinct honor to the University.” Achievements and contributions that impact the community in the local, national, and international level are especially valued. Nominees are evaluated based on their service orientation, leadership, impact of work, and integrity.
Dr. Dina Ocampo is currently the Undersecretary for Programs and Projects of the Department of Education. She earned her BEEd (1985) and master’s degree (1991) at the College of Education where she is also a faculty member and one time Dean (2010-2012). She was one of The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS) in 2007 and an awardee of the Search for Outstanding Teacher (SOT) sponsored by Metrobank Foundation (2009).
Dr. Barbara Wong-Fernandez is currently Assistant Vice President for Academic Development and Director of the University Research Center at Far Eastern University (FEU). She earned her MEd in Guidance at the College of Education (1975 ) where she was once a faculty member. Dr. Wong-Fernandez also served as guidance counselor at the UP Integrated School and was Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs in UP Diliman from 1996 to 1999. Prior to moving to FEU, she taught at De La Salle University in 2000 and became Dean of the College of Education from 2003-2007.

Educ Students’ Demo Teaching Impresses Japanese Students and Teachers
A group of undergraduate Education students brought their Tatak Educ way of teaching and impressed Japanese students and faculty when they did a lesson demonstration at Hiroshima Saniku Gakuin last April 13, 2015 and at Ehime University Attached Junior High School on April 16, 2015. The demonstration of Apple Dungao, Aya Casim, Angelica Pinon, Alfonso Inocencio, and Meg de Castro is part of this year’s Japan Educational Tour organized by Dr. Amelia Fajardo of the Curriculum Studies Area of the College of Education. The group did a demo-teaching at the Grade 8 level of Hiroshima Saniku Gakuin and Fuzoku Junior High school and to Education Majors of Ehime University. Each student did two demo-teaching on the same lesson. No less than the Director of Fuzoka Junior High said that the Educ students’ lessons and demonstrations have positively changed their views of and expectations for Philippine education. The reception for the group was so great that they were featured in the local newspaper and television news the next day. The activity was done as part of the memorandum of agreement between the Ehime University Faculty of Education and the UP College of Education. For the past seven years, Japanese students have been coming to the Philippines to demonstrate at the UP Integrated School. For this year, Dr. Amelia Fajardo experimented and tried to bring UP Education undergraduate students to Japan for the first time.

Radyo Edukado Lands as Finalist at the 23rd Golden Dove Awards
Radyo Edukado, the DZUP (1602 Khz) radio program of the College of Education, University of the Philippines has been recently proclaimed as Finalist (Top 4) for the Best Children’s Program Award at the prestigious 23rd KBP Golden Dove Awards for radio and television. Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP) President, Mr, Ruperto S. Nicdao, Jr. explains that the KBP Golden Dove Awards are given to recognize the efforts of the “best and brightest in the industry.” These refer to programs that not only inform or entertain but also “inculcate positive values in children, adolescents, and adults.” This is the first time that Radyo Edukado has become a finalist in the Golden Dove Awards. The show was recognized for its December 22, 2014 episode, Ang Pasko sa Puso ng mga Bata, which featured guest children, Mika Acido-Muega, and Pio and Bea Oyzon. The program is produced by Dr. Maricris Acido-Muega, and hosted by College of Education Professors, Dr. Michael Arthus Muega and Prof. Vanessa Lusung-Oyzon.
